Flag Football Belts

Speed wins games—but it’s useless without control. In flag football, players need to change direction fast, chase down flag carriers, and pull cleanly without losing balance. That’s where speed and agility drills come in. These five drills will sharpen your players’ quickness, boost reaction time, and improve flag-pulling precision.

Best part? They require minimal equipment, and your Excel Athletics flag football set is all you need to get started.

1. Flag Grab Relay

Purpose: Flag-pulling speed and reaction

Setup: Line players up in pairs, one with a flag belt and one without

How it works:

  • On "go," the runner with the flag zigzags through cones while the other chases

  • The chaser must pull one flag before the end cone

  • Switch roles after each round

💡 Use bright-colored flags (like Excel’s orange/red) for better visibility during the pull.

Coaching Tip: Emphasize flag focus, not body contact. Pull at the hips, not the shoulder.

2. Ladder Footwork Drill

Purpose: Foot speed, coordination, and balance

Setup: Lay down an agility ladder or use cones in a straight line

How it works:

  • Players perform footwork patterns: 2-feet-in, lateral hops, in/out shuffle

  • Keep movements light and fast

  • Repeat each pattern 2–3 times with short rest

Why it matters: Builds fast-twitch muscle control and keeps defenders from over-committing on a fake.

3. Cone Break Drill (Flag Football Edition)

Purpose: Change of direction and reactive cuts

Setup: Create a T or L-shape with 3–4 cones

How it works:

  • Player sprints to the first cone, then breaks sharply left/right

  • At the final cone, they must stop, turn, and simulate a flag pull

  • Alternate sides after each rep

Coaching Tip: Have them wear belts while pulling at a stationary dummy or teammate to simulate game-day pressure.

4. Mirror Drill

Purpose: Defensive reaction and hip movement

Setup: Pair two players 3 yards apart

How it works:

  • One player is the “leader,” the other must mirror their side-to-side movements

  • After 10–15 seconds, switch roles

  • Optional: add a flag pull at the end

Why it works: Helps defenders stay square, react to cuts, and track flag carriers without over-pursuing.

5. 7-Second QB Drill

Purpose: Timing, decision-making under pressure

Setup: Snapper, QB, and a few receivers

How it works:

  • QB has 7 seconds to throw the ball (use a stopwatch or coach’s count)

  • Receivers run short routes while defenders simulate coverage

  • QB must release the ball before time runs out or it’s a dead play

Excel Bonus: Use your flag belts during this drill to prep for live-action pulls after the catch.

Wrap-Up: Train Fast, Play Faster

These drills aren’t just about raw speed—they build the agility, awareness, and confidence that flag football demands. Whether you're coaching a youth team or training in the backyard, consistent reps make the difference.

And don’t forget: your gear matters. A secure belt, bright flags, and proper fit ensure every drill translates to game-day performance.
